Thirty notebooks containing sketches written by Thomas Greaves Cary, Jr., of events in the early history of California, including the gold rush, vigilance committees, and the war with Mexico. Cary was a participant in some of these events, and apparently wrote his sketches in 1883 and 1884. Descriptions of similar sketches by Cary in the Boston Public Library and the Harvard University Library can be found in the National Union Catalog of pre-1956 imprints. Also included is an account book, 1834-38, and letterbook, 1833-53, Cabarras Gold Mining Co. treasurer Thomas Greaves Cary, Sr. Account book and letterbook relate to the gold rush in North Carolina.
